Fratura pélvica bilateral catastrófica em um cavalo de corrida puro-sangue de dois anos de idade

Uma fratura pélvica bilateral catastrófica é descrita em uma égua de corrida puro-sangue de dois anos de idade. O incidente ocorreu 300 metros após o início de uma corrida. A égua parou repentinamente de correr e apresentou claudicação aguda no membro posterior esquerdo e não conseguiu suportar peso. O exame ultrassonográfico mostrou fratura bilateral desviada na asa e corpo do ílio, estendendo-se até o sacro. O contorno do ílio foi identificado como irregular e com superfície espessada, sugestivo de calo periosteal. A fratura bilateral e completa do ílio foi confirmada por necropsia e radiografia post mortem. A histopatologia mostrou alterações ósseas consistentes com fraturas por estresse bilaterais; as fraturas completas originaram-se de uma lesão de microdano pré-existente.
