The purpose of this study was to communicate the occurrence of thrombotic meningoencephalitis (TME) by Histophilus somni in sheep in Uruguay. During the mating season of May 2011, in a flock of 100 animals, 1 breeding ewe and 1 ram died after showing fever, weakness, ataxia, blindness, convulsions and recumbence. Macroscopically, the brain of the ram had hemorrhages in the leptomeninges and numerous foci of liquefactive necrosis (2-5 mm) at the gray-white junction of cerebral hemispheres, basal gray nuclei and thalamus. Microscopically, the foci consisted of suppurative necrosis, vascular thrombosis and numerous bacterial colonies inside the abscesses. Immunohistochemistry assays performed on paraffin-embedded tissues were positive for Histophilus somni confirming the cause of the disease.
