Factors Associated With the Presentation of the Type of Cancer in Dogs Assisted in the Hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary of Uruguay

Abstract

Cancer is one of the most common causes of death in geriatric dogs. The available information is international, and no  information regarding canine cancer in Uruguay was found. The objectives of this study were to determine the casuistry and the frequency of cancers between 2005 and 2010. The association of risk factors such as age, sex and race in the appearance of cancer was investigated. A retrospective study which reviewed all the hospital medical records of the Veterinary School between 2005 and 2010 (n=9277) was performed, recording during 2005 to 2009 only information of the clinical cases of cancer. The data collected in 2010 were treated differentially, defining a control group and a cancer group. The results showed a higher proportion of cancer in females and older dogs than males and young animals. The breeds most affected by cancer tended to be the Rottweiller and Boxer. In the period studied cancer casuistry was between 0.11 and 0.15. This paper concludes that sex, age and race are factors associated with the presence of cancer.
