Abstract

Fifty eight weeks old Corriedale lambs were exposed to different management strategies (weaning, nutrition, drenching).

This trial was under taken. to ascertain the effect of gastrointestinal nematodes on the rate of weight gain until 4 1/2 months of age. The seasonal helminth infestation was also determinated by means of 24 tracer lambs which were slaughtered at different intervals from october to december.

During this period lambs were mainly exposed to 4 nematode genus: NEMATODIRUS spp., HAEMONCHUS spp., OSTERTAGIA spp. and COOPERIA spp.

Early weaning on infested pastures was the factor which erwbled nematode stablishment.

The group of lambs of 3 1/2 months old was greatly bene/itiated by drenching.

Significatives differences in live weight gain were obtained.

The parasitic burden of non-drenched lambs never increased so much as to avoid the effect of a better nurition in all management strategies.
