A dilution containing 4 % p/v (40.000) available chlorine for disinfection of cow teats immediately after milking ("teat dipping") was used twice a day in 28 Holstein friesian cows in different lactation periods and under the same parametric conditions. The experiment was carried out in one dairy farm during three months.
The commercial disinfectant solution (10 % p/v available chlorine) commonly found in the market and recommended as a desinfedant in dairy farms and various domestic uses had after diluted to 4 % p/v lees concentration of residual NaOH than the maximum advised concentration (0.08 % p/v).
The right front (RF) and left rear (LR) teats of all the cows were dipped in the disinfectant duririg 1-2 seconds and the other two, the left front (LF) and right rear (RRl teats were dipped in saline solution during the same time in order to have two teats as controls.
No differences were found between the four teats after the experiment was over proving the irnocuity of the disinfectant at the concentration used.
The use and some precautions to consider about sodium hypochlorite to dip the teats are discussed.
