Babesiosis-Anaplasmosis in the action area of the Northwest Paysandú Regional Laboratory

A picture of the geographic distribution and prevalence of Babesiosis and Anaplasmosis in the area of influence of the Northwest Regional Laboratory of Paysandu in the period going from January 1980 to December 1990 is given. Seasonality of the outbreaks is remarkable. Babesiosis ocurring mainly in autumn and Anaplasmosis in winter. Babesia bovis was the causative agentin 91 % of the cases and only 9 % were caused by Babesia bigemina. We arrived to the conclusion that the main hemoparasites causing disease and mortality in our area of influence are B. bovis, A. marginale and B. bigemina being the latter less important.
