Abstract

A survey of 382 cattle-raesers confirmed the finding that skin myasis is a factor of major economic importance in rural running in Uruguay. The myasis was found in all the establishments surveyed. The general prevalence was 4.5% in bovines and 6.2% in sheep included in the sample; of these affected animals the general deathrate was 6.5% in bovines and 18.5% in sheep. An evaluation was made according to the different zones of Uruguay. The most affected zone in sheep was the Centerand South of the country and the South in cattle. The condition is frequent between November and April in all the categories of bovines and ovines. As for the lesions noted during the year surveyed, in particular, these involving the navel in calves as well as complicatons from foot disease in sheep proved of most common occurrence.
